Originally founded as the Rio Bravo Friends of Wine in 1993 by Klaus Hoeper, Kathleen Hoeper and Renate Hance-Patty as the founding Directors, the Rio Bravo Friends of Wine evolved into the Bakersfield Friends of Wine and had dinner/tastings at the Bakersfield Country Club for many years.
Tastings were also held at Rio Bravo and Café Med for special events during the summer and winter. The Board reformed with the addition of Bob Patty as a Director.
In January 2014 the founding members after years of building what has become known as one of Bakersfields BEST wine organizations passed the torch on to Tahlia Fischer and Tom and Dawn Cook. The purpose of the group is to introduce interesting wines from both established and boutique wineries in Paso Robles, Napa, Sonoma and Santa Barbara appellations. Over the years, literally hundreds of wineries have been introduced to our “friends”.
The Bakersfield Friends of Wine hosts six dinner/tastings each year comprised of four sit-down, multiple course dinners and two “fests”, one in June and one in December. Our “fests” are widely anticipated as there are usually 6 – 9 wineries offering their wines to sample.
